The Athena II feels very light but not cheap. It has been smooth on smaller presentations and pairs well with a finesse rod when I want a more delicate setup.
Thank you, Nathan. We are glad the Athena II gave you that lighter, more refined feel without losing the smoothness needed for finesse fishing.
I paired this reel with a 7-foot spinning rod for some bank fishing and it felt right at home. The retrieve is smooth, it handled fish around cover without any issues, and the setup felt light and comfortable to fish. It has been a very nice everyday option for lighter use.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Glad the reel is working well for you on the water.
Light and great for finesse fishing. Drag surprisingly strong for its size. After several trips in different conditions, including wind and current, it has continued to perform consistently. Line lay remains clean and I have not experienced unexpected drag surges or mechanical noise. It feels like a reel that was built with long-term use in mind rather than short-term flash.
Finesse setups benefit from light balance. Appreciate you highlighting that.
I grabbed the BK Athena II Ultralight Spinning Reel to pair with my light trout and panfish setups, and it has quickly become one of my favorites. Right from the first cast it felt smooth and balanced, and the ultralight design makes it easy to fish all day without fatigue.
The retrieve is buttery smooth and the drag kicks in gently and predictably when a fish makes a run. I've used it on small bass, crappie, and trout, and it handles everything with confidence. Even in windy conditions it stays quiet and feels very responsive.
What I appreciate most is how well it pairs with ultralight rods, it doesn't feel bulky or awkward, and the overall feel gives you a lot of control. For the price, this reel outperforms many in its class. Definitely a reel I'm keeping in my regular rotation.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We're really glad to hear that the Athena II Ultralight Spinning Reel has become one of your go-to reels for lighter setups.
We designed this model with smooth action and effortless handling in mind, especially for finesse fishing scenarios like trout, crappie, and panfish. It's great to know the combination of lightweight feel, smooth retrieve, and reliable drag has translated to real success on the water.
If you ever want suggestions on line weights, rod pairings, or other fishing techniques that work well with the Athena II, feel free to reach out anytime. Thanks again for choosing ReelUp, and here's to many more fun days on the water!
I've been using thie onel on a light rod for creek and pond fishing, and it has been a lot of fun. The reel feels very light in the hand, the retrieve is smooth, and the drag starts up nicely without any jerky feeling on lighter line. It's great for smaller bass, trout, and panfish.
The only downside is that because it's so ultralight, it doesn't feel as tank-like-as some of my heavier reels, so I probably wouldn't push it too hard on bigger fish. But for what it's made for finesse and ultralight setups - it does a very good job, especially for the price. Overall, I'm happy with it and would recommend it if you're looking for a light, smooth reel for smaller fish.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the BK Athena II Ultralight Spinning Reel. We're really glad to hear it's been a good match for your light rod and that the smooth retrieve and gentle drag are working well on smaller bass, trout, and panfish.
You're absolutely right -the Athena II is designed specifically for ultralight and finesse fishing, so it focuses more on sensitivity and low weight than For bigger or heavier fish, we would definitely recommend stepping up to a stronger series, and your comment is very helpful for other anglers deciding which reel fits their style best.
